Javier A. Menendez, PhD, from the Catalan Institute of Oncology in Girona, Spain, found that about 20-30% of breast cancers could be resisted by the EVOO (extra virgin olive oil) or olive oil.
Menendez and his colleagues isolated a variety of chemical compounds contained in olive oil. They found thatthere are two types of compounds, namely secoiridoids and lignans are active against HER2 molecules on cancer cells, but not active against normal cells (no HER2).

They also found that high intake of EVOO in the amount given to cancer-induced rats are able to tame the cancer. But this does not necessarily mean that consume large amounts of EVOO may fight cancer, because if taken too much of anything is not good for health.
Secoiridoids compounds present in EVOO seems to be ineffective when given orally, as soon broken down into inactive compounds, but these compounds could potentially be a starting point for the development of new cancer drugs. Other compounds, the lignans, working directly locally on breast cancer cells.
