The Fish Oil Can Treat Prostate Cancer

A study conducted by John S Witte Ph.D, and colleagues at the University of California concluded that a diet rich in oily fish such as sardines, mackerel, and salmon may protect men from advanced prostate cancer.

In this study, Professor Witte and colleagues compared the diets of 466 men diagnosed with aggressive prostate cancer and as many as 378 men who did not have cancer.

They found that men who often consume oily fish (one to three times as much per month) have a risk as much as 36% less for the development of prostate cancer when compared with men who do not eat fish. Men who eat fish more regularly, ie once a week, have 57% less chance for developing prostate cancer.
Men who have a gene-derived COX-2 potentially five times more likely to get prostate cancer, but the researchers found that a high intake of fatty acids can prevent it.

Oily fish, like salmon, sardines, herring, and tuna are rich in fatty acids content of omega-3, also known as PUFA (polyunsaturated fatty acids). Several previous studies showed that supplements of omega-3 fatty acids can reduce cardiovascular disease and fatal heart attacks and slow atherosclerosis.

Given the importance of fish oil, the American Heart Association suggests that eating fish at least twice a week. Each year an estimated half million new cases of prostate cancer was diagnosed. Prostate cancer is the second leading cause of death from cancer in the United States.
